Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Pronto.com Accelerates Web Apps with Crescendo
Pronto.com Ensures the Performance and Availability of its Web Properties with Crescendo’s AppBeat DC

Crescendo Networks announced that Pronto.com is using AppBeat DC to ensure the performance, efficiency and availability of its Web applications for shoppers worldwide. Pronto.com is the Web's fastest growing comparison and social shopping site with more than 15 million monthly users, 70,000 Web retailers and 70 million products. It is an operating business of IAC, which owns more than 35 Internet businesses including Ask.com, Citysearch, Match.com and Evite.

“Our online presence and the site’s performance are critical elements for our business. The faster we can deliver search and comparison results to customers, the more likely they are to purchase a product from our partners. This creates a direct correlation between front- and back-end server performance, and revenue,” said Tony Casson, Director of Operations at Pronto.com. “To maximize this performance, we decided to deploy Crescendo’s AppBeat DC. The volume of traffic the product can handle, combined with a variety of features around application assurance, protection and optimization, help us deliver the ultimate user experience.”

AppBeat DC provides high availability, scalability, acceleration and optimization for Web applications. Unlike competing solutions, AppBeat DC leverages the purpose-built platform, designed for maximum performance and feature concurrency. By offloading servers from process-intensive tasks and optimizing the delivery of the application to users, AppBeat DC improves overall application performance, security and availability while reducing datacenter costs.

As an online comparison-shopping resource, Pronto.com has some fairly unique and diverse Web challenges, including holiday spikes in traffic, intense back-end database processing associated with comparing products, and the need to scale the site as they grow.

“Since moving from traditional load balancers to Crescendo’s technology, we no longer battle with bandwidth utilization and flash crowd traffic. We’ve also been able to maximize our server computing resources and improve user response times and server efficiency,” continued Casson.

“Pronto.com is a great example of an online retailer that is experiencing massive growth, and with that expansion comes immense stress on its Web applications and infrastructure,” said Adoram Ga’ash, CEO of Crescendo Networks. “By implementing AppBeat DC, Pronto.com is able to scale and capitalize on that growth without worrying about the performance, availability and future scalability of its Web properties. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring a quality user experience for the online customer, and we help Pronto.com deliver that.”
