Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

VirtualLogix Delivers Virtualization Support for Intel-Based Mobile Internet Devices
VLX Virtualization Solution Provides Improved Quality of Service for Intel Atom Processor Z5XX Series MIDs

VirtualLogix announced that its VLX virtualization solution will be supporting the latest Intel Atom processor Z5XX series-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). Device makers using VLX on these MIDs can simplify hardware designs, reduce costs and enhance the end-user experience through improved quality of voice, multimedia services and stronger security capabilities. VirtualLogix VLX also offers complete power management support for virtualized environments, which reduces MIDs' overall energy consumption.

MIDs are an emerging category of devices that offer a Web experience similar to a desktop computer on-the-go. The low memory consumption and real-time performance that VLX offers make it very suitable for MIDs. The VLX hypervisor integrates transparently into a Windows or a Linux-based MID with no re-installation of the native operating system (OS) and no intrusion into the existing user environment. As a result, customers can use VLX's flexible software architecture to securely separate critical applications while boosting the quality of service offerings. Additionally, by servicing the virtual appliances while the main application OS and associated hardware resources are not in use, VLX improves power consumption management.

"VirtualLogix is once again leading the market, breaking new ground for virtualization technology and helping bring next-generation devices to market," said Peter Richards, CEO, VirtualLogix. "MIDs will allow consumers to connect to the Web anywhere, anytime, and we are pleased to bring virtualization solutions to support Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices."

"Mobile Internet Devices are an exciting and growing market segment and we welcome VirtualLogix to the fast thriving MID ecosystem," said Pankaj Kedia, director of Global Ecosystem Programs in Intel Corporation's Ultra Mobility Group. "Intel's low power and high performance Atom processor, coupled with VirtualLogix virtualization solution, should enable our customers to bring compelling devices to the marketplace."

The demand for next-generation devices is expanding. In a recent report, "Mobile Internet Device (MID) & Chip Market Opportunities," Forward Concepts forecasted MID shipment growth from 305,000 units in 2008 to 39.6 million units in 2012. At the same time, convergence and increased interconnectivity are driving the demand for virtualization, which enables device manufacturers and developers to develop richer, more functional devices faster and with reduced bill-of-material costs, reduced power, improved security and greater reliability.
