Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Vordel 5.1 Puts Policy Control at the Heart of XML Networks
Centralized Management of SOA Policies Enforced by XML Gateways as Part of Comprehensive SOA Governance Strategy

Vordel unveiled version 5.1 of its XML network infrastructure products, to accelerate, manage and protect XML applications. Vordel 5.1 addresses the need for lifecycle management of policy across the SOA. By combining the central management of SOA policies with distributed enforcement across a network of XML gateways, organizations generate increased returns on IT architecture and maximize their SOA investments.

As businesses build out more complex SOA, there is an ever greater need for aggregated policy management across the IT infrastructure. Enterprise Architects require policies for performance, availability and access control that govern the role of business services, but also demand a cost-effective approach to policy management as SOA is rolled out. Vordel recognizes that policies must encompass not only XML gateways, but also many of the critical products spanning the existing IT infrastructure such as network management, identity management, anti-virus, network firewalls, registries and ESB platforms. Vordel Policy Director directs the enforcement of these policies to a distributed network of XML gateway appliances, providing control across the IT architecture.

L. Frank Kenney, Research Director with Gartner believes that, “within the next 18 months there will be a perfect storm – a combination of events that causes a phenomenon that will push many companies, regardless of technology maturity, to strongly consider integration and infrastructure appliances. This perfect storm will include:

  • Increased XML use within IT departments, causing a need for accelerated parsing and extreme security measures, such as malicious code and intrusion detection.
  • The effect of service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance technologies, causing rapid policy enforcement for performance, availability and access control.

David McKenna, VP Engineering with Vordel commented, “Our powerful policy model allows our customers to take control of their SOA by creating policies which encompass not only Vordel products, but also identity-management, network monitoring, and anti-virus. By enabling the control of policies centrally at design time and managing their enforcement and monitoring at run time we permit companies to put SOA policy management at the heart of their XML networks.”

Highlights

  • A policy model which encompasses not only Vordel XML gateways, but also identity management, network firewalls, anti-virus, and system monitoring.
  • Lifecycle policy management with creation, roll-back, and deployment
  • Role-based access to policies
