Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Phurnace Announces Support for JBoss
Web App Server Configuration Software Accelerates Deployment, Decreases Errors

Phurnace announced support for JBoss web application servers with the availability of its newest version, Phurnace Deliver 3.3. The latest release, available in mid-February, provides IT operations staff with the resources they need to decrease configuration errors, which is one of the biggest sources of downtime. The software reduces deployment times and associated costs for faster, more cohesive enterprise Java deployments on the leading open source web application server. Phurnace Deliver 3.3 is implemented with an Eclipse Rich Client Platform user interface, providing enhanced “console-like” functionality for the JBoss server.

“JBoss is increasingly being used by large companies in production environments,” said Daniel Nelson, Phurnace vice president of products. “Phurnace provides software tools to make that easier to manage. We dramatically simplify the set up, configuration and application deployments on JBoss while decreasing the many possible configuration and deployment errors.”

Phurnace Deliver 3.3 provides comprehensive support for IT staff and developers during complex enterprise Java deployments to decrease errors, streamline deployments and avoid the downtime and outages that come with manual or script-based processes. The current JBoss user approach of directly editing XML files or building cumbersome scripts can be reduced or eliminated with Phurnace, therefore making JBoss a more viable option for enterprise deployments across production environments.

The new release provides unique features for the JBoss web application server, including support for remote investigation, set up and deployment. Also unique to JBoss, Phurnace provides a “proxy plug-in” facility to interrogate the array of XML files JBoss uses and then intelligently makes requested modifications.

Additional Phurnace Deliver 3.3 functionality includes:

  • Added support for JBoss Web application servers (IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic currently supported)
  • Ability to compare configurations across remote servers to aid troubleshooting
  • Integration into industry standard source code repositories (e.g. Subversion and CVS)
  • Additional wizards for ease of set up and use
  • Eclipse RCP graphical user interface and command line interface options

“The Phurnace toolkit now supports JBoss which will speed deployments of applications on the JBoss server in production environments.” Said Dusty O’Brien, a power-JBoss user in Austin, Texas. He continued, “The more sys admin tools that emerge for JBoss, the more it will spread in large-scale production environments.”
