Folio: Magazine, Circulation Management Magazine, DM News, M10Report Magazine and Other Leading Industry Publications Report JDJ
Apr. 2, 2004 12:00 AM
(Montvale, NJ, April 2, 2004) - SYS-CON Media, the world's leading i-technology magazine publisher, announced today that its flagship print magazine, JDJ, ranked number 1 in the world in digital circulation delivery. JDJ's most recent six-month average circulation was 162,019 copies, of which 43% was requested by its subscribers to be delivered digitally. JDJ's monthly digital edition is an identical replica of its print edition, and SYS-CON's advertising partners enjoy an incredible bonus exposure they receive beyond its 60,000 rate base, which was never increased since its first issue.

"We've been growing our digital subscriptions actively for the past 24 months, more or less in line with customer bandwidth," says Jeremy Geelan, group publisher of SYS-CON Media. According to Folio:, "Of the magazine's 162,019 subscribers, nearly 70,000 (43 percent) receive it in digital format. Geelan says the magazine's readers, developers and information systems managers are natural early adopters: They don't need to call the help desk to open their digital mags. Geelan notes that digital has a unique advantage when it comes to international subscriptions. "It's deliverable by us instantaneously whether it's to Baltimore or Bali." (http://foliomag.com/ar/marketing_going_digital/index.htm) DM News reports that "JDJ Leads in Digital Subscriptions" in its March 29 issue. (http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26874) Circulation Management Magazine reported that "JDJ is leading the way with 69,776 digital only subscriptions, or 43.1 percent of its total qualified circulation of 162,091, according to an analysis by The Circulator." (http://circman.com/ar/marketing_java_developers_journal/index.htm) According to M10Report article written by Ted Bahr, "The top-ten digitally delivered magazines are all tech titles, with JDJ, published by SYS-CON Media, leading the pack with 43 percent of its file delivered digitally." (http://www.m10report.com/html/227.asp) M10Report ranks the top 10 magazines as follows:
SOURCE: BPA International publisher's statements. NOTE: Under BPA International rules, a subscriber who has opted to receive both the print and digital editions of a publication is reported only once and counted only once within that and the corresponding % of total qualified circulation of those combined subs are provided only for informational purposes. 32,320 JDJ subscribers receive the magazine both in print and in its digital edition, but counted as only one within the magazine's qualified circulation numbers. "Unlocking the bottom-line benefits of technology is more than just our overall content focus, the common theme uniting our twelve titles," said Jeremy Geelan, group publisher of SYS-CON Media. "It is also the organizing principle of our own business. The digital distribution technologies we have developed and pioneered at SYS-CON bring benefits far in excess of their costs, including revenue befits. By serving our customers - readers and advertising partners and the industry at large - through extending the reach of our magazines digitally, we can also serve ourselves." "SYS-CON's digital delivery revolution will set an industry standard among all magazine publishers," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and CEO of SYS-CON Media. "As we look at the numbers, we see more and more of our readers demanding immediate digital delivery of our leading magazines. Although we believe deeply that the digital delivery will not change our fundamental print magazine business which includes worldwide newsstand distribution, we will start delivery of our leading title, XML-Journal, in a digital-only format with the May issue." For the past 12 issues, XML-Journal's editorial content has been split 60% Web services and 40% purely XML focused articles. Starting May, as XML-J's digital circulation doubles from its current print distribution, Web Services Journal will offer an expanded XML coverage with a bonus distribution to XML-Journal's print subscribers.
