Pervasive Open Sources Postgres Database
Pervasive Open Sources Postgres Database

Global data infrastructure software leader, Pervasive Software, entered Pervasive Postgres in the open source market. This is the first integrated set of open source software and services from an established database company. The move is designed to remove significant barriers to adoption of Pervasive products and to help enterprises benefit from open source database technology.

Publicly owned Pervasive has a 20-year history in delivering high quality, low cost data management products. Its customer base, numbering in the tens of thousands, is distributed around the world. Its introduction of Postgres gives corporate customers access to a superior open source database from a reputable source.

"As the software industry continues to mature and commoditize, open source technology provides mainstream business users a powerful and affordable alternative to restrictive and expensive traditional software infrastructure," said David Sikora, president and CEO, Pervasive Software. "With the commercial backing, superior services, award-winning support and development enhancements from Pervasive Software, Pervasive Postgres will be the most advanced and consumable open source alternative for mainstream business applications. The addition of Pervasive Postgres to our data infrastructure software family now gives us a full spectrum of database offerings that meets the needs of customers both large and small. Would-be corporate adopters of open source databases can now depend on one of the most trusted and experienced database companies in the marketplace."

Pervasive believes that the success of Postgres depends on support of the open source community. To this end, the company is devoted to collaborating with the global Postgres community. While other open source databases focus on simply servicing high volume Web sites, Pervasive Postgres will offer formal support, a clear roadmap and technological enhancements designed to help reduce the costs and remove critical barriers facing open source adoption, ensuring that Postgres is suitable for more users.

Josh Berkus, a member of the Postgres Core Team, Postgres' community leadership group, said, "Pervasive's help driving the rapidly growing acceptance of Postgres in the mainstream business community is very welcome. The adoption of our technology by a well-established proprietary database vendor demonstrates how cooperation between open source developers and software companies can work to benefit the entire industry."

"Postgres has always had strong support within the open source community due to its xcellent database technology," said David Patrick, vice president of Novell. "With Pervasive's backing, support, and services, it's ready to move into the enterprise." Pervasive will offer annual subscriptions, which will include support, updates, and value added tools for Pervasive Postgres. Subscriptions will be available for a range of required service levels, from basic product updates to 24/7 live production support. Pricing will range from $99 per year for each server for basic updates to $4,999 per year per server for premium production support.

>> why would anyone form a community around this

This /is/ PostgreSQL. I think the story has got garbled somewhere. Pervasive are not open-sourcing their proprietary database, Pervasive.SQL, but starting to market PostgreSQL along side it.

Pervasive's new product, Pervasive Postgres, is PostgreSQL 8 plus commercial support (plus marketing).

While it's always good when a company takes a product open source, I have to wonder: why would anyone form a community around this project when we already have PostgreSQL, a very powerful, Free, and (data-wise) secure database? PostgreSQL is so blasted powerful and reliable--by design--that I just don't see the point.

Then, we have MySQL if we want raw speed, but don't need all of the reliability features of PostgreSQL. MySQL already can hook into OpenOffice.org, and, as with PostgreSQL, several e-commerce Web sites have been using MySQL for several years, so we know that it's good, too.

fyi a preview version of Pervasive Postgres is being distributed for free as pre-compiled binaries for Windows and Linux under an early access program here (http://www.pervasive-postgres.com/)
