Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

J2EE Benchmarking: BEA Sets New SPEC jAppServer2002 World Record
J2EE Benchmarking: BEA Sets New SPEC jAppServer2002 World Record

BEA announced it has established a new SPEC (Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation) jAppServer2002 world record. BEA's WebLogic Server 8.1 and JRockit 1.4.2 produced a new world record in the dual node category on LangChao's SP3000 server.

jAppServer2002 is an independently designed and validated industry-standard benchmark that measures the performance of application servers running typical Java business applications. Created by SPEC, this particular client/server benchmark has been ported to use the J2EE 1.3 standard. The workload has not been enhanced to use any added features of J2EE 1.3.

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) is a nonprofit corporation that was formed to establish, maintain and support a standardized set of relevant benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance computers. SPEC develops suites of benchmarks and reviews and publishes results that member organizations, including BEA, and other benchmark licensees submit.

BEA WebLogic Server and JRockit achieved 1638 business transactions per second on LangChao's high-end  SP3000 server. The benchmark test was carried out on a software and hardware platform, including BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 and BEA JRockit 1.4.2, as well as LangChao SP3000 Server running on Intel Itanium2 64-bit processor.

Frank Xiong, vice president of BEA, said, "These benchmark test results have strongly indicated that BEA WebLogic Server is among the most rapid and cost-effective application infrastructure platforms in this market. Customers have one more local brand option when they choose enterprise-level server."

Minerva Yeung, PhD, director of Intel's China software center, commented, "BEA and Chinese fellow travelers set the world performance record again on the WebLogic Application Server based on the Intel Itanium2 based processors. This shows the technology leadership and potentials of the Intel Itanium 2 processor architecture. It also demonstrates that Intel, BEA and their Chinese fellow-travelers are collaborating more and more closely to provide world class product combinations to the Chinese customers."
