"We are excited that our chief medical officer is being recognized for his expertise on such an important topic as e-Prescribing and asked to play a role in shaping future legislation," said Jay Deady, Eclipsys executive vice president. "Eclipsys is committed to providing solutions that help care providers improve patient safety, and e-Prescribing can be critical to helping reduce avoidable medication errors. Dr. Elson has played a vital role in helping us bring to market the powerful capabilities of our e-Prescribing solution, which provides expert clinical decision support at the point of care for safe, informed prescribing. The solution also cross-references drug therapies with patient drug and medical histories, medical knowledge databases and payor formularies."

Participating with Elson on the program are Jonathan White, MD, health IT portfolio manager, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ); Jake Jennings, associate chief, Wireline Services Bureau, Federal Communications Commission (FCC); Harry Reynolds, vice president, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina; John Carroll, Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL); and Stephen Badger, chief executive officer, George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates.

The session will take place on Wednesday, December 5, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Room SR 188 of the Russell Senate Office Building at the United States Capitol.

As Eclipsys chief medical officer, Dr. Elson works with Eclipsys senior executives to set the company's long-term clinical strategy and short-term priorities for Eclipsys solutions. Dr. Elson has extensive experience with e-Prescribing. In addition to designing and managing one of the first commercial e-Prescribing applications, he spent two years as the medical director at RxHub, a vendor-neutral data exchange utility that has figured prominently in the e-Prescribing landscape. Most recently, Dr. Elson directed the Cleveland CMS e-Prescribing pilot, a year-long project designed to characterize e-Prescribing adoption and workflow in small physician practices, as well as test e-Prescribing transactions being considered for inclusion in the final Medicare e-Prescribing rules. Dr. Elson was a major contributing author to the eHealth Initiative's landmark e-Prescribing Report in 2004. Dr. Elson, a former National Library of Medicine Fellow in Informatics, has a strong academic background and remains on the research faculty at the MetroHealth Center for Healthcare Policy and Research in Cleveland.
