Dont underestimate the SLA's role in accountability. For companies that have dynamic requirements and no down time can be afforded, make sure you have very tight SLAs. For example, OpSource provides a 100% SLA in the cloud and 100%SLA around production application environments. Now 100% is ideally perfect, it comes down to accountability, yo...

Featured Analyst Discusses Why Virtualization Requires Capacity Planning
Featured Analyst Discusses Why Virtualization Requires Capacity Planning

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamQuest Corporation, the worldwide leader in IT Service Optimization software, has released a 10 minute audio interview (podcast) featuring Cameron Haight, vice president for IT operations management research at Gartner Research. The interview points out why capacity planning and performance management are important in virtualized server environments.

Based on some of the hype surrounding virtualization, one might believe virtualized environments can manage their own performance. Because virtual server environments now exist that can dynamically move resources based on consumption metrics, one might conclude that capacity planning is no longer needed. However, as confirmed during the podcast, knowledgeable practitioners of IT management know otherwise.

TeamQuest product manager Scott Adams agrees with those observations, "Most IT organizations today are not effectively managing virtualized environments. Unfortunately, most virtualization platforms don't provide the intelligence needed to understand the applications and services that are making use of virtualized resources."

Server virtualization presents unique challenges for its users. For example:

-- At what level of activity will an application or service exceed the capacity of a virtual machine? -- When will a virtual machine exceed a limit for a resource? -- How much of the physical system is being consumed by each virtual machine? -- What does it mean if my application is using 50% of a CPU? What is 50% of a virtual CPU?

"To realize the true value of virtualization," says Adams, "organizations must embrace capacity planning and performance management practices." In fact, Gartner's Haight notes that ever-increasing virtual server densities means that server failures can cause much larger impacts to the end user population, thus increasing the importance of effectively managing virtualized environments.
