PESSAMIT, QUEBEC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/14/07 -- The Chief of the Pessamit Innu, Raphael Picard, will travel to New York City this weekend, Nov 16-18, to be a guest Speaker at the North American New Humanist Forum. On this occasion, he will give a talk on the role of the Cultures in the development of the North American Region. "It's an opportunity to meet with progressive activists coming from all over North America, and to present for them a realistic vision of the situation of the First Nations in Quebec, and of their place in international agreements like the NAFTA," explained Chief Picard. The North American New Humanist Forum will gather people, organisations and community groups from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada in order to encourage "thinking beyond borders". The Forum aims to identify new norms that are human-centered and more respectful of the different cultures of the continent; norms that should replace the purely economics-driven agenda that currently governs the relations between the countries of North America. "The Forum is an open space for people to come together and discuss the urgent issues facing us as North Americans. Disarmament, immigration, the role of labour, the situation of the First Nations, discrimination - these are the topics that go to the heart of what 'security and prosperity' are really about for people," added Chris Wells, Spokesperson for New Humanism. Along with Chief Picard, the Forum features keynote speaker Tomï¿1/2s Hirsch, the 2005 Chilean Presidential candidate for 'Juntos Podemos Mas', the broadest left-wing alliance since the time of Salvador Allende; Anna Polo, representative of Europe for Peace, speaking against the installation of new U.S. missile bases; and the Mexican Consul General, Ramon Xilotl Ramirez.
