Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Sybase PowerBuilder 9.0 Beta Supports XML, JSP, and Third-Party Application Servers
Sybase PowerBuilder 9.0 Beta Supports XML, JSP, and Third-Party Application Servers

(August 6, 2002) - At its TechWave 2002 conference in San Diego, Sybase, Inc., announced availability of the beta version of Sybase PowerBuilder 9.0. This updated version of Sybase's industry-leading rapid application development (RAD) tool incorporates new features - including XML, Java Server Pages, and third-party application server support - that allow developers to build for, and deploy into, multi-architectural environments such as distributed, Web, and client-server.

The first phase of the PowerBuilder 9.0 beta will support a number of key capabilities including:

  • XML DataWindow -- Imports data directly from a XML document and saves data that was retrieved from any data source as a fully customized XML document

  • Java Server Pages (JSP) -- Allows developers to quickly develop and deploy a JSP Web application through wizards and other RAD tools

  • PowerBuilder Native Interface -- Greatly extends the capabilities of the application by allowing the PowerBuilder virtual machine to load a C++ application and call its methods

  • Third-Party Application Servers -- Includes support for BEA's WebLogic and IBM's WebSphere through wizards to generate proxies for enterprise Java beans (EJBs) and to call the EJBs in J2EE servers from PowerBuilder through the proxies

  • Source Control Enhancements -- Helps developers manage large PowerBuilder projects more efficiently and have tighter integration with Rational's Clear Case and Merant's PVCS

  • ORCAscript Utility -- Invokes ORCA application program interface commands with English-like scripting language; New source code control integration allows PowerBuilder targets to be rebuilt directly from source control

Key capabilities to be included in future PowerBuilder 9.0 beta products include:

  • Web Services -- Will allow developers to build, publish and consume Web services based on the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Services Description Language (WSDL)

  • XML Services -- Will enable developers to create, read, and write XML documents

  • Microsoft .NET-- Will provide support for Microsoft's new development framework through Web services

Sybase's open beta testing for PowerBuilder 9.0 began earlier this month and the product is scheduled to become generally available in the first half of 2003. Pricing and packaging will be announced at that time. For more information on the beta program, please visit www.sybase.com/betapb90program.
