Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Zero G's InstallAnywhere 5.5 Adds Advanced Server Development Features

(May 19, 2003) - Zero G has released a new version of its InstallAnywhere multiplatform software deployment solution. InstallAnywhere 5.5 offers features that cut development times and ease complex software deployment across the enterprise. InstallAnywhere 5.5 is also the first multiplatform solution to support Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Linux 9, and Novell NetWare.

New features include:

  • Merge Modules: Quickly design and create suite installers;
  • Automated Build Process: Easily integrate with existing build processes;
  • Manifest Files: Build new installers directly from a list of files without needing to open and modify entire project files;
  • Collaborative Coding: Quickly develop installers using multiple machines, different operating systems, or even teams from different companies;
  • Advanced Scripting: Support for powerful scripting tools including ANT;
  • XML Project Files: Check projects in and out of source control systems or modify them directly using XSL;
  • Installer Development Productivity: Build projects using the exclusive "tree view" of files, drag-and-drop support, and contextual right-click menus;
  • Intelligent Installation: Save by overwriting files in applications that are running and intelligently handle previously installed files;
  • Flexible Delivery: Install software from the Web or from a CD-ROM;
  • Platform Optimization: Automatically detects and optimizes installation for any enterprise platform;
  • Text and HTML help display: Display end-user help from within the Install Wizard;
  • Look and Feel: Match the native look of each platform or customize the look using the extensive built-in graphics library.

    InstallAnywhere 5.5 now supports Windows Server 2003, Novell NetWare, and Red Hat Linux 9, as well as the entire Windows family (95,98,Me,NT,2000,XP), Mac OS X, Solaris, Linux, IRIX, Tru64, FreeBSD, and virtually all other Java-enabled platforms. It is compatible with all editions of Java, up to and including the latest Java 1.4 and Java implementations from Sun, IBM, BEA, and others. It is fully compliant with the requirements of Microsoft's "Designed for Windows XP" and Apple's "Built for Mac OS X" certifications.

    Hi!
    At the whole the InstallAnywhere is a great product, but still there are missing some feature which would help a lot to install/deploy into J2EE-environment. There are some limitations with the Ant-script and also with the OS-batch usage.
    But, as compared generally, it's providing a lot features.
