Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

China Mobile and Agricultural Bank of China
05/09/2007 - Sybase announced that China Mobile and the Agricultural Bank of China have chosen Sybase mobile messaging and analytic solutions to meet the challenges of growing international competition and more demanding customers. China Mobile, one of the world's largest mobile operators with more than 300 million subscribers, selected Sybase 365 mobile services to provide International SMS connectivity to their mobile subscribers. It is now taking advantage of Sybase 365's extensive global reach and connectivity across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Africa. Through Sybase 365, China Mobile is able to reach more than 1.7 billion mobile subscribers around the world. From December 2006, Sybase 365 enabled China Mobile subscribers to send and receive SMS text messages from their friends, families, and colleagues in the Americas. With the rest of the world now being connected, this agreement also opens a vast potential SMS revenue stream for the operator. The Agricultural Bank of China - the country's largest state-owned commercial bank - has chosen Sybase IQ ahead of Oracle and IBM for its analytics database platform and data warehouse projects. As industry competition intensifies, the Bank's traditional way of reporting, which relies on distributed data collection and bottom-up reports that follow the corporate ladder, is no longer the most viable way of supporting its business. For the solution to this challenge, the Bank turned to Sybase IQ to build a standardized analytics database system that is capable of leveraging existing IT assets while handling large volumes of data and simultaneous inquiries and lowering data storage costs. Sybase IQ features efficiency levels several hundred times higher than traditional databases and offers superior support for simultaneous inquiries. This makes the solution particularly appealing to banks like Agricultural Bank of China with numerous branches, diversified services, and high volume of data. Sybase IQ can also seamlessly integrate with existing IT systems, thus giving a higher return of investment.

Answers Anywhere Natural Language Engine
05/22/2007 - Sybase iAnywhere announced it is enhancing its presence in the telematics and embedded devices markets by enabling embedded applications to provide intelligent user interfaces and context-aware user interactions. Extending the company's Answers Anywhere technology, Sybase iAnywhere now offers a natural language engine that targets the memory-constrained world of embedded devices. The new Answers Anywhere functionality enables developers to improve the user experience of resource-constrained devices that otherwise would have limited user interface capabilities. Interacting in a natural, free-form, and context-sensitive way will generate a higher degree of satisfaction, reduce training requirements, and result in a higher task completion rate for users. For example, an automotive telematics product would allow users to ask for information or control applications in their own words to easily access directions, weather, yellow page content or control functionality such as air conditioning or entertainment systems.

Red Hat
05/10/2007 - Sybase and Red Hat, a provider of open source solutions, announced plans for an expanded partnership that will include the delivery of a database appliance based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with integrated virtualization. This pairing will unlock customer value by leveraging Red Hat virtualized infrastructure and Sybase's continuing data management leadership. This marks the first time an enterprise data management company has announced plans for a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 database appliance. Integrated virtualization will enable the flexibility of on-demand resource management, and provide a substantial increase in the performance of database systems. Sybase's enterprise-class database, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), will seamlessly leverage online migration and high-availability capabilities when running on the Red Hat Advanced Platform. In addition, the two companies are announcing plans for Sybase to become a member of the Red Hat Cooperative Resolution Center, which will enable mutual customers of Red Hat and Sybase to call either company and be assured that the two will work closely together to resolve concerns. In addition, Sybase's membership in the Red Hat Cooperative Resolution Center will allow the parties to have joint labs, end-to-end testing, cross-support training, and defined escalation procedures.

Garden Ridge
05/07/2007 - Sybase announced that Garden Ridge, the Houston-based home decor retailer, selected Sybase IQ analytics server as its data platform for operational reporting and analytics. Before its Sybase IQ implementation, Garden Ridge had to wait four to six hours, on a normal day, for database updates and queries. It also experienced periodic database issues that interfered with normal business operations. With quick implementation of Sybase IQ, Garden Ridge has reduced database processing time to less than two hours and eliminated its previous technical issues, improving productivity. Sybase IQ analytics server typically delivers query performance 10 to 100 times faster than ordinary data management platforms while using standard hardware and operating systems. Sybase IQ is designed especially for the highly efficient storage, retrieval, and analysis of massive volumes of data. It works easily with business intelligence applications including MicroStrategy, Business Objects, and Cognos.

Lawsuit Appeal
05/25/2007 - Sybase announced that it will appeal the decision of the jury in the Telecommunication Systems (TCS) vs. Mobile 365 patent infringement trial, which found that Mobile 365, a recently acquired subsidiary of Sybase, infringes the patent asserted in the case. The jury awarded TCS damages in the amount of $12.1 million. Of this amount, it is expected that Sybase would bear responsibility, should its appeal not prevail, for approximately $1.5 million after reflecting merger indemnification rights described below. While Sybase respects the jury system, it believes that the jury made a mistake in its decision, and the Company intends to appeal. The November 2006 merger agreement entered into by Sybase and Mobile 365 established an escrow that provides for indemnification of Sybase by Mobile 365's former stockholders for certain losses related to this litigation. Sybase believes that the escrow established by the merger agreement will be adequate to address the substantial majority of losses, if any, related to this litigation. The case was tried in the Richmond division of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Honorable James Spencer presiding.

TeleCommication Systems
05/25/2007 - TeleCommunication Systems, Inc., a provider of mission-critical wireless data solutions, announced that it has received a favorable decision from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia as to claims in its U.S. patent 6,985,748 titled "Inter-Carrier Messaging Service Providing Phone Number Only Experience" against Sybase 365 (formerly Mobile 365 and now a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc.). The patent describes technology that enables wireless subscribers to send messages to subscribers in other wireless carrier networks by simply entering the recipient's phone number. The jury found Sybase 365 infringed against the claims of the TCS patent and awarded TCS a one-time monetary payment of $12.1M for past damages, which represents a 12% royalty. The jury also found Sybase 365's infringement willful and upheld the validity of the patent. The jury's finding is subject to post-trial motions and appeal.
