Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Gateway 3U Server Earns Best of FOSE 2007 Award
Gateway E-9722R Server Wins the Enterprise Hardware Category in the Annual Government Computer News (GCN) Best of FOSE Awards

IRVINE, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway, Inc. today announced that its new E-9722R server won the Best of FOSE 2007 Award for the Enterprise Hardware category.

Held in Washington DC this week, FOSE is the government's largest gathering of information technology professionals. More than 100 high technology companies submitted new products in the annual GCN Best of FOSE Awards program, with only 16 companies receiving the distinguished award across a wide range of technology categories.

"We're thrilled to be honored with a Best of FOSE Award for our new 3U rack server," said Tim Diefenthaler, Gateway senior director, professional product management. "Leveraging four dual-core processors, memory expansion and twelve hard drives, our E-9722R is ideal for virtualization, which more and more government customers are using to consolidate their resources. Together with our number one customer satisfaction rankings from Technology Business Research for corporate desktops and notebooks, this award confirms that we're delivering the innovative products and outstanding service customers want."

The Gateway(R) E-9722R Server is powered by up to four dual-core AMD Opteron 8000 Series processors and the NVIDIA MCP55 Pro chipset. The E-9722R can also be outfitted with optional AMD Opteron HE processors, which are designed for higher power efficiency and lower electricity costs. The AMD Opteron processor provides next-generation features, including hardware-assisted AMD Virtualization(TM) and energy-efficient DDR2 memory. They're also designed for seamless upgradeability to quad-core computing. Therefore the E-9722R server is ideal as a virtual server to consolidate multiple server activities, or for high-performance database (Oracle and Microsoft SQL) and ERP-level business applications.

This new rack-mount server brings exceptional I/O performance and expansion with four NICs and five PCI slots. It also provides optimum expansion with room for twelve 3.5 inch, hot-swap SAS or SATA II hard drives. Utilizing 750GB SATA hard disk drives, the E-9722R supports up to 9TB. With support for dual array configurations and integrated RAID storage subsystems, the E-9722R has the highest storage/rack height ratio that Gateway has ever offered.

Tool-free chassis', tool-free motherboards and color-coded components streamline deployment and support. In addition, it shares components including RAID daughter cards, drive carriers and system management.

Bringing a high level of efficiency to IT departments, Gateway Lights Out (GLO) system management allows customers to remotely shut down and re-start their server regardless of power condition. An optional low-cost remote control K/V/M with media redirect features enables IT managers to take full remote control of a server.

Customers can also use Gateway's System Management Integrated LCD (SMIL) to monitor a server's health and operating status. This powerful optional add-on simply hot plugs to the front of the server and displays vital statistics on a full-color, easy-to-read LCD panel.

The server can be configured with both SAS and SATA II drives in the same system, so customers can choose the technology best suited to their needs. Integrated RAID offers a cost-effective solution while saving a valuable expansion slot. Support for RAID 5 + Hot Spare and RAID 10 options offer greater redundancy and integrity.

Lastly, it delivers high availability with redundant, hot-swap fans and power supply options. Hot swappable fans, not available on many competitive systems, provide exceptional cooling capability as well as greater availability in case of fan failure. The new highly efficient, redundant power supplies require less energy to run and produce less heat output, helping to extend component life.
