(July 2, 2003) - Our weekly round-up of selected quotes taken from this week's leading news and technology publications. "With more than 25% of the market for server computer operating systems, Linux has emerged as the best hope for keeping competition alive in a corporate software market that could otherwise be dominated by Microsoft Corp. Companies need Linux to counterbalance Microsoft's Windows hegemony." Otis Port - in BusinessWeek, July 7, 2003 "SCO owns none of the extant Unix patents. Most of the AT&T patents on Unix have also expired some time ago. If SCO somehow manages to dig up some long-lost patent now implemented in Linux, then it has lost all rights to make claims on that patent by knowingly distributing this code under the GPL." Con Zymaris - in the Sydney Morning Herald, July 2, 2003 "USA TODAY: There seems to be some worry at Microsoft about Linux and some of these Web-based things like Sim Desk that have popped up. Houston, Munich, and Beijing have all been considering using Linux-based products rather than going through Microsoft. How much of this is a concern? BILL GATES: Well those are our current competitors. I mean, it's no different than in the past people used OS/2." Interview - USA Today, June 29, 2003 "USA TODAY: Is there a scenario by which you would at some point consider porting Microsoft applications into Linux? BILL GATES: There's no consideration of that at this point." Interview - USA Today, June 29, 2003 Reader Feedback: Page 1 of 1
