Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

ScaleMP to Support Intel True Scale InfiniBand and Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor

ScaleMP™, a leading provider of virtualization solutions for high-end computing, today announced upcoming support for the Intel® True Scale Fabric Host Adapter 7300 Series and the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor.

“The upcoming vSMP 5.0 foundation builds upon support for Intel® Xeon® processors, and adds support for new Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors and Intel® True Scale fabric,” said Joe Curley, director of marketing in Technical Computing Group at Intel Corporation. “Customers who have already seen the benefit of ScaleMP’s virtualized environment will soon be able to optimize their environment for highly parallel computing and high performance interconnects.”

Support for Intel True Scale Fabric Host Adapters

The upcoming vSMP Foundation 5.0 will support the latest Intel True Scale Fabric Host Adapter 7300 Series. By supporting this InfiniBand adapter, ScaleMP will provide customers with more choice of interconnect technologies. vSMP Foundation depends on fast movement of data and as such will utilize the unique architecture of the Intel True ScaleMP Fabric HCA to provide improved performance compared to previous generations of vSMP Foundation.

Support for Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor

vSMP Foundation 5.0 will support the recently announced Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor, Intel’s latest entry for high performance computing. This revolutionary coprocessor is based on Intel Architecture (IA) and is designed for highly parallel workloads. vSMP Foundation will support the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor in two modes: processor-virtualized mode and coprocessor-aggregated mode.

Under the processor-virtualized mode, vSMP Foundation virtualizes the entire platform, both the host CPU and memory with the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor cores and memory. Thus, any application that runs on an existing IA host system will seamlessly run on the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor based system. Applications which are scalable will see an immediate performance gain due to having over 60 cores available running in one instance of the operating system. With coprocessor-aggregated mode, vSMP Foundation support traditional coprocessor operational mode allowing for offloading and native execution when aggregating multiple servers to a larger virtual SMP.

“ScaleMP has been working with Intel for many years. We are very excited to be able to offer our customers support for the Intel True Scale Fabric Host Adapter which will enable the high performance that they expect when running computationally and data intensive applications. In addition, by allowing developers and customers the ability to run their existing applications on the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor transparently through virtualization, we are enabling ISV’s to develop and optimize extremely powerful applications”, said Shai Fultheim, CEO and founder of ScaleMP.

Pricing & Availability

vSMP Foundation 5.0 is maintaining the same licensing model as its predecessors, starting as low as $400 per socket. The per-socket pricing model allows for greater simplicity when it comes to selecting platforms for vSMP Foundation and provides customer peace of mind, focusing on the virtual SMP size and capabilities, rather than on the nodes size and model.

vSMP Foundation is also available with floating licenses, allowing customers to reuse the same license for future hardware generations. Floating licenses provide the best ROI when it comes to vSMP Foundation licenses. vSMP Foundation 5.0 will be available in 1Q2013 with incremental feature releases throughout 2Q2013. Technology preview of vSMP Foundation 5.0 will be available for selected customers in December.

About vSMP Foundation

vSMP Foundation aggregates multiple industry-standard off-the-shelf x86 servers into a single virtual high-end system. vSMP Foundation provides customers with an alternative to traditional expensive symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) systems and also offers simplified clustering infrastructure with a single operating system. It supports aggregation of up to 128 servers into a single virtual SMP system, providing customers with:

  • Up to 256 TB of shared memory for large memory requirements;
  • Up to 32,768 cores virtual SMP, proven scalability and record-breaking memory bandwidth;
  • Ease of use and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for clusters coupled with simplified storage architecture;
  • On-demand SMP with support for most common provisioning systems, allowing for increased datacenter utilization with consolidated architecture;
