Anesthesia Business Consultants to Resell DR Systems Meaningful Use EHR

DR Systems announced today that the company has signed a distribution agreement with Anesthesia Business Consultants (ABC) of Jackson, Michigan to resell its cloud-based ambulatory EHR. DR Systems is one of the most respected names in enterprise medical imaging information systems (RIS, CVIS, PACS), and the 2011 #1 ranked PACS vendor by KLAS®.

The EHR, sold by DR Systems under the name e|HR for Meaningful Use, will be marketed by ABC as F1RSTUseTM. The launch of F1RSTUse was timed so that anesthesiologists and pain management specialists could meet the approaching deadline for complying with Meaningful Use requirements. Anesthesiologists and their practices can receive federal bonus payments by implementing a complete, certified ambulatory EHR such as F1RSTUse. ABC is the exclusive distributor of DR Systems’ e|HR for the anesthesiology market.

ABC has designed the F1RSTUse implementation process such that there is nothing for anesthesiologists or their practice to buy. To satisfy Meaningful Use requirements, practices must collect certain information on each patient. ABC allows them to collect that information either on paper or electronically. They then send that information to ABC, which enters it into F1RSTUse, helps the practice enroll in the program, tracks the practice’s progress toward meeting program requirements, and attests to the government. ABC is compensated when the practice receives its payments from the government.

“F1RSTUse is the first EHR platform built exclusively for anesthesiologists and pain management specialists that will satisfy Stage 1 Meaningful Use requirements,” said Bryan Sullivan, Vice-President of Clinical Technologies at Anesthesia Business Consultants. “We are making implementation of this system as free of administrative burden as possible. We understand that even an easy-to-use system such as this one represents a change in routine so we have absorbed nearly all of the challenge.”

Most anesthesiologists are eligible for anesthesiology incentive payments from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Anesthesiologists have to qualify as soon as possible to earn the incentive payment, because the total incentive payment is reduced each year. Failure to comply with meaningful use requirements will eventually subject anesthesiologists and others to financial penalties.

“Anesthesiologists benefit in multiple ways by deploying a system such as F1RSTUse,” said Murray Reicher, M.D., F.A.C.R., DR Systems co-founder and chairman. “First, they actually improve patient care and the efficiency of their anesthesiology workflow, including the collection of patient information and integration of that information with the EHR. Second, they earn a substantial, five-figure incentive payment that far exceeds the cost of the system.”

There are three important features to F1RSTUse that make it a practical solution for anesthesia:

  • F1RSTUse is entirely web-based and requires no infrastructure support for the hospital, practice or provider, regardless of whether the anesthesiologists chart on paper or an electronic anesthesia record.
  • F1RSTUse combines EHR technology with a Personal Health Record (PHR) system that is available to patients and enables anesthesiologists to meet the follow-up required by some of the Meaningful Use measures.
  • All management activities are handled by ABC.

The EHR from DR Systems is 2011/2012 compliant in accordance with criteria adopted by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. This certification is the official designation necessary for the EHR to enable providers to qualify for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
