AllTrails released its first mobile application in 2011, which quickly became one of the top outdoor apps for the iPhone. AllTrails for Android was released one year ago, and has quickly surged in popularity in the Google Play store — garnering a spot among the Top 25 Travel Apps and over half a million installs.

The rapid adoption of smartphones was a major driving force behind bringing the AllTrails premium subscription service to retail. The product will be sold under the name "The Ultimate Outdoor MapKit" and will be co-branded under both the AllTrails and National Geographic brands. Customers purchasing MapKit through their favorite outdoor retailer will be able to redeem their purchase for 1 year of access to AllTrails Pro. This provides them with unlimited access to National Geographic TOPO! and Trails Illustrated maps, as well as advanced trip-planning tools which can be accessed online through a web browser, and offline on a smartphone or by printing maps on-demand.
