Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Sun Microsystems Java(TM) Technologies Sweep Java Developer's Journal and SOA Web Services Journal 2006 Reader's Choice Awards
Awards Highlight Sun SOA Support With Category Wins Spanning From Best Platform, Framework, Portal and IDE to Best Training and

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. , the creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today announced a series of accolades from both the Java Developer's Journal (JDJ) and SOA Web Services Journal Reader's Choice Awards. Sun products and technologies were recognized as winners for three categories of the JDJ awards, and nine categories of the SOA Web Services awards.

"Sun constantly strives to stay in touch with the needs of our developers and deliver the best set of technologies to address their needs," said John Loiacano, executive vice president of software, Sun Microsystems. "The fact that we swept these awards is a clear indication that our efforts are meeting with success, especially as developers work to implement service-oriented architectures."

Sun won three Java Developer's Journal Reader's Choice Awards: -- The Best Java Training award went to Sun Java(TM) BluePrints, which provide guidelines, patterns and code for end-to-end enterprise, web services and wireless services applications that are robust, scalable and portable. -- The Best Java Virtual Machine award went to the Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition (SE). Java SE provides a complete environment for application development on desktops and servers and for deployment in embedded environments. -- The Best Java Application Development Framework award went to Sun Java(TM) Studio Enterprise (JSE). The JSE development tool is used by developers to build solutions for anything from simple Web applications, to portlet components of Web portals, to sophisticated enterprise applications and Web services. Sun won nine SOA Web Services Journal Reader's Choice Awards: -- The Best Web Services Platform award went to the Java(TM) Platform, Enterprise Edition (EE). Java EE defines deployment requirements for numerous Web services APIs and utilizes the JAX-RPC programming model. -- The Best SOA Portal Platform award went to Sun Java(TM) System Portal Server. The Java System Portal Server provides full implementations of JSR 168 and WSRP along with support for multiple J2EE containers on all leading OS environments. -- The Best Framework for SOA and Web Services award went to Java(TM) Web Services Developer Pack (WSDP). The Java WSDP is a free integrated toolkit that can be used to build, test and deploy XML applications, Web services, and Web applications with the latest Web service technologies and standards implementations. -- The Best IDE award went to Sun Java(TM) Studio Enterprise. The Java Studio Enterprise IDE was created with enterprise architects and developers in mind. It contains all the functionality needed to develop, debug, tune and test enterprise applications, web services and portal components based on Java platform standards. -- The Best XML Parser award went to Java API(TM) for XML Processing. The Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) supports processing of XML documents using DOM, SAX, and XSLT. JAXP enables applications to parse and transform XML documents independent of a particular XML processing implementation. -- The Best XML Utility award went to Java API for XML Processing. Depending on the needs of the application, developers have the flexibility to swap between XML processors (such as high performance vs. memory conservative parsers) without making application code changes. Thus, application and tools developers can rapidly and easily XML-enable their Java applications for e-commerce, application integration, and dynamic Web publishing. -- The Best SOA or XML Training award went to Java Web Services Developer Pack Tutorial. Java WSDP is a free integrated toolkit that allows Java developers to build and test XML applications, Web services, and Web applications with the latest Web services technologies and standards implementations. -- The Best SOA or XML Site award went to java.sun.com/webservices. The site gives extensive information on Java and Web services technologies. -- The Best SOA Security Solution award went to JWSDP XML and Web Services Security. The XML and Web Services Security implementation in Java Web Services Developer Pack 1.6 provides a framework within which JAX-RPC or SAAJ application developer are able to secure applications.
