Sybase at SAP TechEd Berlin
The new boy's in town
Oct. 20, 2010 05:00 AM
SAP TechEd is a new environment for Sybase, with the possibility of many or most attendees not having much experience with Sybase products, or perhaps not even having heard of Sybase, beyond the acquisition announcements.
Credit to my colleague Rob Verschoor (twitter: @rob_verschoor) for supplying the analysis...
It was pleasing to see "Sybase technology" prominently mentioned as one of the highlights of the conference at the top of page #1 of the conference agenda booklet. Sybase had continued exposure during the big-hall opening session... In the pre-keynote, some metrics were shown about TechEd, including 4000 attendees in Berlin; 15000 over the joint 4 TechEd locations and '17 Sybase sessions' were highlighted, which put Sybase in the spotlight from the start.
During the morning keynote by Vishal Sikka (SAP CTO), the wordcount stood at 'Sybase' 22 times; 'ASE': 3 times, 'CEP': 2 times; 'Replication Server': 1 time. Most of this came during a 5-minute period where a slide dedicated to Sybase products was discussed, much of it about Data Management products and Messaging (i.e. SY 365). 'Mobility' was mentioned all over the presentation and Vishal mentioned that "... with Sybase, SAP is the #1 business mobility company".
Also during the keynote, there was a live HANA demo showing 'propagation' of a value update in a sales app into a report in another app. It was mentioned during the demo that it was actually Sybase Replication Server that made this work under the covers. Another separate demo also mentioned Sybase CEP as being used.

The Exhibition Hall covered a large area, with many exhibitors. The Sybase stand had a lot of passing traffic from the attendees. Discussions took the form of all of our products, though there was a slight bias on Mobility and a number of Sybase staff were at hand to discuss and demo the Sales CRM on the iPad. Those staff attending that knew Mobility were being asked a lot of questions with regard to the SAP/SY Mobility vision and the current Mobility product stack.
The Sybase education sessions pulled in extremely good attendance numbers from attendees. Reports from our presenters in Berlin, were that the attendees of our sessions were eager to find out more about Sybase
technologies with many interesting product based questions. Sessions that were very popular centered around, the SAP Unwired Platform, Afaria and iPhone &iPad in the Enterprise (approximately 300 in one of the lecture theaters). Other Sessions, such as Overview of Sybase IQ and ASE 15.5, were also well attended.
For the first two days of TechEd Berlin the SAP Global Communications Center was open. During this time, Irfan Khan & Ian Thain were available to Analysts, Journalists and SAP Influencers, such as the SAP Mentors. Irfan & Ian were part of 3 roundtables, check out one here and Irfan Khan also appeared on SAP TV, check it out here.
