International Yacht Vacations & Charters Magazine - News Coverage St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA), who is one of the main sponsors of St. Maarten Sea Scouts donated $10,000 to the program. Much time of SMMTA has gone into the exploration of the best way to best make use of the funds to expose the youth of St. Maarten to careers in the marine trades. One of the first requirements is to develop a relationship with the sea and that has led to the St. Maarten Sea Scouts which is open to anyone from the age of 11 – 20 years. The Sea Scout program has world wide membership and support, a St. Maarten Sea Scouts have 8 small sailboats under construction at this time and a small fishing boat to rebuild. On Wednesday, September 21st, the SMMTA made its first donation of $10,000.00 to the Sea Scouts to provide swimming and sailing lessons, to help with the completion of the boats and to develop future marine related programs. The St. Maarten Red Cross has generously offered the space to set up a Sea Scout Base in SMMTA, with over 100 members, owns and organizes the St. Maarten Charter Yacht Exhibition (SCYE 2004). This donation would not have been possible without the generosity of our SCYE 2004 cash and supporting sponsors. In addition to the $10,000 cash donation, the Sea Scouts will be presented with a certificate listing our cash sponsors.
