Web 2.0 News Desk Microsoft Ties Outlook to LinkedIn; Facebook & MySpace to Follow

Microsoft Wednesday tied its Outlook e-mail client to LinkedIn - with Facebook and MySpace to follow - to "bring social networking into the inbox." It's supposed to be more private than Google's disaster with Buzz and connect to existing social networks rather than create new ones. LinkedIn for Outlook, a 32-bit downloadable public beta, lets users of the Office 2010 beta see status updates and photos in e-mail. Outlook contact data can be updated by LinkedIn contact data, LinkedIn connections can be added through Outlook and mobile phone contact info sync'd with web data. Facebook and MySpace connections will be available down the road. The widgetry will be in Office 2010 when it comes out in June and made available as add-ons to Office 2003 and 2007 complements of Microsoft's so-called Outlook Social Connector. Microsoft cut deals with LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace on undisclosed terms. See linkedin.com/outlook and office.com/beta. Reader Feedback: Page 1 of 1
