Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Nortel Provides Cloud-Based Real-Time Applications
Leverages Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud from Amazon Web Services

Cloud Computing Expo on Ulitzer

Nortel is giving enterprises the opportunity to trial and evaluate its communications applications portfolio over the Internet using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud(2) (Amazon EC2). The platform also provides a sandbox-environment for the Nortel developer community to build innovative and complementary applications through new technologies such as Web services.

"Nortel's decision to provide access to its communication enabled business solutions over Amazon EC2 is yet another indicator that cloud computing is the future," said Sheila McGee-Smith, president and principal analyst, McGee-Smith Analytics. "Today Nortel is giving their customers, application developers and business partners both a platform to create and test combining enterprise assets with Nortel and Amazon Web Services-enabled solutions and a place where these same groups can share their applications and successes."

On-demand access to Nortel's unified communications-based applications, which includes Nortel Contact Center, Interactive Communications Portal and Agile Communication Environment, is accessible via an information-rich portal at http://create.nortelcebs.com/. This community-oriented site lets enterprise customers trial and/or customize applications and serves as a knowledge base for the developer community offering discussion forums, product documentation, sample applications, source code, tutorials, podcasts and white papers.

"This highly accessible environment provides customers and developers a simple low-cost, risk-free sandbox for evaluation and testing," said Phil Edholm, chief technology & strategy officer, Nortel Enterprise Solutions. "Cloud computing also enables a very compelling go-to-market model, dramatically expanding the number of customers that have access to Nortel's leading applications."

"Amazon Web Services is pleased that Nortel is leveraging Amazon EC2 in their offering," said Steve Rabuchin, director, Developer Relations and Business Development, AWS. "Amazon EC2 enables users to develop and deploy applications in a highly available, elastic environment for large scale computing. By leveraging the Amazon Web Services, Nortel is opening up their solutions for more users to take advantage of them."

By leveraging AWS, Nortel is extending the Nortel Developer Program, which has long welcomed commercial companies seeking to create products for sale to mutual Nortel customers, as well as existing Nortel customers seeking to develop customized applications and/or integrations for their own internal use.

Nortel has been a leader in the customer contact marketplace for more than 30 years, offering the broadest application portfolio that includes contact center, self-service, advanced speech and workforce optimization solutions. Nortel also continues to drive the integration of communications and business processes with advanced services and software-based solutions like Agile Communication Environment, which expand the array of applications and capabilities available to enterprises.
