litl_phil wrote: While it's nice that Google and Acer share the vision of cloud-based computing, it's also worth noting that we at litl already have a webbook on the market (available at litl.com) that runs our own cloud-based OS. Unlike Chrome, litlOS is focused on creating a new and better web experience for the home, so we don't have the usual browser interface, we have our own innovative UI. In conjunction with easel mode (litl's inverted-V position) and our growing cohort of litl channels (special apps t...

Cannibalizing Google App Engine

Speaker:

Kevin Noonan

Software Developer, Consultant & Entrepreneur
Calbane Ltd.

Track:Management, Testing, Security & Interoperability

Google App Engine is an integrated web-stack, so it may not be apparent that its computing resources can be dismembered and consumed in isolation. In this session you will learn how to:
  • Use BigTable, the sweetmeat of Google technology, as a scalable database for desktop or remote web applications.
  • Freely host open-source software such as a blog or CMS for your project or company.
  • Run scheduled tasks and work queues to move App Engine beyond a web-stack to a general computing platform.
  • Host web-services.
  • Serve static web-content (for a site hosted elsewhere).
  • Exploit the XMPP protocol for peer-to-peer architectures, instant-messaging, presence and machine-to-machine communication.
  • Use an abstraction layer over BigTable, for access with JDBC or as a virtual filesystem.
  • Run dynamic languages, such as JRuby and Clojure, on App Engine’s JVM.
