Tactical Cloud Computing refers to the use of cloud computing technology and techniques for the support of localized and short-lived information access and processing requirements. At the First Annual Government IT Conference & Expo, this discussion panel explored how defense, homeland security and law enforcement organizations are looking to leverage this new and exciting IT capability.
The panelists in this discussion were Kevin Jackson, Director Business Development for Dataline, LLC; Kartik Mecheri, Chief Technologist for a large government contract and works for Unisys Federal Division; Melvin Greer, Senior Research Engineer, SOA / Cloud Computing Chief Architect, and Director SOA Competency Center, Lockheed Martin, Advanced Technologies Office; and David Ayoub, CTO for the GEOINT Research Development & Technology Division of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Use cases of tactical cloud computing could include "Cloudbursting" to support cyclic data processing requirements; Establishing a cloud-based collaboration environment in order to coordinate firefighting resources during a wildfire; virtually binding shipboard IT infrastructures in order to create a battlegroup infrastructure-as-a-service platform; virtually binding land vehicle based servers and storage resources into a battlefield data center; and dynamic provisioning of virtual cloud-based servers in order to automate exploitation and dissemination of unmanned air vehicle (UAV) streaming video feeds.
There are two types of adaptive systems noted Kartik Mecheri. "How do I meet the SLA of the cloud adapters?" he asked. "What are my strategies?" You need to monitor fine-grained modeling from a consumer and provider perspective. But how do you co-mingle service providers? Inter-cloud dependencies will be resolved. And open source solutions become more relevant to cloud providers. At that point, Kevin Jackson introduced Dave Ayoub, who noted that SAIC, a provider of IT, is customer focused and provide data security and its most recent procurement is with emergency management. He also noted that there are many different types and flavors of cloud computing.
Next, Melvin Greer spoke on how to deploy SOA and Cloud with a tactical approach. Lockheed Martin is helping the federal government implement cloud computing. He also talked about deployment models and how mismatch causes friction deployment with business models He then noted that it's all about the data - you need to maintain data in a privacy fashion to then move forward with the cloud. You should also understand what it means to have a hybrid cloud, a public/private cloud and target services through cloud deployment models.
