Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Netbiscuits Mobilizes Projects for a Better World
The Winners of the World Summit Youth Award put sustainable projects into mobile action

Five winners of the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) receive free access to the Netbiscuits platform and thus have the opportunity to transcribe their projects for all mobile end devices and reach more users. Netbiscuits, the leading, web-based B2B Software-Platform for development, operation and marketing of mobile websites, gets involved in this way as an official support partner for the WSYA. The multimedia contest supports the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations for sustainable aid in the third world. The main goals are the fight against hunger, the bisection of poverty until 2015 and education for all.

Mobile phones will play a vital role in bridging the digital divide between industrial states and emerging markets and in facilitating the access to information and education: here, the mobile phone is the only access to digital information for many people. Netbiscuits disposes of the important key technology to make mobile web-applications globally accessible - irrespective of network providers, end terminals or other restrictions. From a technological point of view the digital divide can be narrowed in a sustainable manner in this way.

The following projects will be honoured with a free Netbiscuits Enterprise Account during the four day Winners Events from 2 – 5 September in Monterrey, Mexico:

  • Mobile Doctor, Austria: A mobile application, that provides information in emergency situations on where to find the nearest hospital or doctor.
  • Voice of Africa for Sustainable Development, Kenya:  An online platform, that is directed especially towards women and youths to get actively involved in local projects.
  • Greenlighted, USA: An online-shop that evaluates well known brands in respect to their dedication to social responsibility.
  • The Extraordinaries, USA: A software, which enables non-profit work to be done via smart phone.
  • Dokhtiran, Iran: An online magazine, which provides information on the rights of women.

"We are pleased to support the five winners by providing access to our platform, and to give them the opportunity to make their services accessible globally on practically any type of mobile phone", explains Michael Neidhöfer, CEO of Netbiscuits GmbH. "At the same time this gives a better understanding of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals to a global audience."

About the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA):

In 2009 the WSYA takes place for the second time since its premier in Tunis in 2005. The youth contest is being held in the framework of the World Summit Awards (WSA) supported by Cyber Peace Initiative (CPI) as well as relevant UN Organisations (UNESCO, UNIDO, UN GAID) and the Internet Society (ISOC). The project WSYA is in the hands of the International Center for New Media (ICNM) in Salzburg (under honorary leadership of Prof. Dr. Peter A. Bruck).

The WSYA is an official contribution to the World Summit on the Information Society and its action plan towards 2015, and was held in spring of 2009 in cooperation with national and international organisations from more than 160 countries.
