Sybase European Mobility Event Mobile Enterprise 2010

Last week was the Sybase Mobile Enterprise event in Amsterdam, just like previous years it drew a good number of attendees. Registrations numbered over 280 of Europe's Mobility Visionaries, divided by the following countries...Netherlands 37%, Germany 20%, UK 16%, Denmark 7%, Belgium 6%, Spain 3%, France 3%, Switzerland 2%, Macedonia 2%, Norway 1%, Sweden 1%, Italy 1%. Mike Oliver, EMEA Mobility Marketing Manager for Sybase opened by articulating a great overview of Mobility, including a reminder that "long standing products are as relevant now as ever before... check out SQLAnywhere".

Sybase Nordic Roadshow - Day #4

Country facts, are that Finland has over 1.8 million saunas... that's a sauna for every 3 people. We also find ourselves in the home of the Nokia Corporation. An early morning flight heading North East from Stockholm over the Baltic Sea, took the team on the last leg of a very successful Sybase Nordic Roadshow, which in total as been attended by over 350 attendees. I have been able to Evangelise the Sybase Mobility Stack, the SAP/Sybase Mobility vision and iOS devices adoption into business, during the last 4 days. Whilst I have been on this Roadshow I have also once again been successfully enjoying using my iPad to work whilst at the events, with the need to only charge it once.

Home of a company that has conquered the world with classy Swedish designs and quality, that company being one of its great success stories, IKEA. Along with Meatballs (check out the Pelican, in Stockholm), ABBA, Bjorn Borg, SAAB, Volvo and the Jumbo Hostal at the airport. Our event today in the Grand Hotel, Stockholm was well attended and two thirds of attendees were new to Sybase technologies, that is a great opportunity for us to 'spread the word'.

Now sit comfortably as I'm going to tell you a story, just like Copenhagen's most favorite writer son Hans Christen Anderson... Copenhagen, home of Lego (that Wikipedia tells me, comes from a Danish work that means 'Play well') and a beautiful city that sits on the Baltic sea, also home of the Vikings and cool modern Danish design, such as Bang and Olufsen. Once again we had a great attendance and a very welcoming as well as knowledgeable crowd.

The night before the event at 35,000ft, traveling due North... The Roadshow is a four track, four location event covering Data Management, Data Analytics, PowerBuilder & Mobility, stopping at Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. I am taking part in the Mobility Track and will be able to discuss, The SAP Unwired Platform, Afaria, Mobile Office, SQL Anywhere, the SAP/Sybase vision on mobility and will be presenting a session called 'iPhone and iPad in the Enterprise'. This presentation is a combination of facts, professional findings and thought leadership, with respect the the current and future adoption of the iOS devices into Enterprise companies to mobilise current and future data to Information Workers.

A Look Back at TechWave 2010

Last week in Washington DC, we held our annual Sybase TechWave which was made up of 3 days, 150+ Technical Training sessions and 700 approx. attendees, that sure adds up to a great event. Precede that with a Keynote from John Chen and Raj Nathan and a Six Plenary sessions. I have attended over 10 TechWaves as a Sybase Employee and its a great event for us to speak to you, our customers, and the feedback of the event was very positive. The attendees I spoke to liked the location, facilities, sessions and format of TechWave.

TechWave Revisited

Once again I thought this was one of the best TechWaves in years. Better than last year's, which was good. Having my laptop crash on me when I'm scheduled to do four sessions wasn't pleasant and took the edge off of it for me. Otherwise, it might have been a real blast. Location – I'm still not a big fan of Las Vegas, but the Mandalay Bay was a great place to hold the event.

Even the most sceptical observer would be hard pressed to argue that Sybase isn’t making some smart - or at least pretty interesting - moves right now. Bringing in the Sybase 365 division to position the company as the ‘database company with the unique focus on mobile communications’ sets it apart from the crowd.

TechWave 2007

This year TechWave 2007 took place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. For those of you who didn't make it, the following is a recap of the events, with a couple of thoughts and suggestions thrown in. Officially the only thing going on Sunday was conference registration. However, there is a private TeamSybase/Sybase reception on Sunday evening where, among other things, new TeamSybase members are inducted. This year we added one new member: Roland Smith.

Sybase Development Tools Boot Camp

I went to Vienna for the Sybase Development Tools Boot Camp in November, my first trip to Europe. Haven't seen much yet, except the duty free sections of the airports, after my 10-hour flight from Johannesburg, and a nice three-hour stopover at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Then the two-hour trip to Vienna, and a half-hour taxi ride to the hotel here in Vienna.

You may be asking yourself, what's happening in the Microsoft Windows Mobile space? Well, Reed Shilts (in his trademark Hawaiian and PocketBuilder slogan shirts) and I attended Microsoft's MEDC 2005, Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 10-12, 2005, as an exhibitor. The purpose was to evangelize about Sybase UnWired Products along with iAnywhere.
